There are hundreds of resources for high school students to become more globally competent. Students can study abroad, participate in a class, join a globally-minded organization... just to name a few. Check some of my favorite resources out below and come visit the Global Engagement Center in the Guidance Office for more info!

The Experiment in International Living is an immersive high school exchange program. The Experiment offers 33 summer abroad programs in 27 countries. Themes range from Sustainability & The Environment to Arts & Social Change. Some programs are FULLY FUNDED. This organization is highly recommended by Senora Traub! Email her for more details!

Rotary Interact encourages students to take action, build international understanding, and make new friends around the world. Students can participate in World Interact Week, Rotary Youth Day at the United Nations, Global Youth Service Day, and the Rotary High School Student Exchange Programs around the world. Canton High School current has a Rotary Interact Club. Contact Senora Traub or Mr. Kevin Case for more info!

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange is a FULLY FUNDED program through the U.S. Department of State in which high school students fully immerse themselves in German culture by living with a host family and attending a local high school. No previous language knowledge is required.

The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES) provides competitive FULL merit-based scholarships for U.S. citizens in secondary school (age 15-18.5) to study for one academic year in select countries such as India, Jordan, Malaysia, Thailand, Senegal, Morocco, Turkey, and the Philippines. Students live with a host family and attend a local high school with the goal of promoting mutual understanding between the United States and the host country by forming lasting relationships with the local community.

NSLI For Youth is a FULLY FUNDED U.S. Department of State program that provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students and recent high school graduates to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. Current languages include Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Korean, and Russian.

Operation Groundswell is on a mission to create a more equitable, just, and sustainable world through travel. Their Backpacktivist Manifesto explains some of their travel goals such as Full Life Livin', Sustainablity, Humility, and Conscientiousness. Senora Traub has led the Guatemalan Seeds of Change Program and HIGHLY RECOMMENDS this organization based on what they stand for.

EarthWatch Institute offers student fellowships for teenagers who aspire to be the leaders of their generation, engaging in both individual and collective action for the environment. Example programs are Ignite, LA and Girls in Science, USA.

The Road Less Traveled is an extraordinary summer travel opportunity for teens to join with others, explore humanity, and build deep relationships and an appreciation for our world’s vast adventurous scenery and its people. Programs are held in a variety of places such as Tanzania, Vietnam, Costa Rica, and Iceland.

Where There Be Dragons offers authentic cultural immersion programs in 19 countries throughout Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Students can travel in the summer or as part of a Gap Year. Their mission includes nurturing empathy and understanding across borders through authentic cultural exchange.

Apogee Adventures offers exciting teen adventure camps, service, and education programs to students 11 to 18 in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean & Europe. Adventures are rated on a 1-12 Challenge Level and range from Biking coast to coast in the USA to hiking in Scotland!

Global Glimpse is a non-profit organization that partners with a diversity of high performing high schools to provide a two-year leadership, civic engagement, and college preparatory program centered on a summer immersion experience in the developing world. Programs are hosted in Ecuador, Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua.

Global Leadership Adventures operates summer volunteer programs for high school students, exclusively in authentic, non-tourist communities. Through these programs, teens will develop meaningful relationships with local people, participate in leadership activities, and take part in adventures such as zip lining and hiking through ruins.

National Geographic Student Expeditions aim to inspire and educate middle and high school students ages 13 and older. Students can get into the field on an Expedition, Community Service trip, Photography Workshop, or University Workshop, in a destination that captures their imagination. Destinations include the Swiss Alps, the Australia's Great Barrier Reef, and the ancient Roman city of Pompeii.

Putney Student Travel has been providing programs for middle and high school students since 1951! Program themes include teen community service, language immersion, outdoor adventure, and pre-college and destinations range from Alaska to Thailand to Rwanda!

Student Diplomacy Corps provides opportunities and scholarships for high school students from across the nation and around the world to access dynamic international education summer programs that build college readiness, deepen understanding of global issues and unleash the potential and creativity of youth.

Sustainable Summer prepares students to become environmental leaders. Programs are hosted in Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador & the Galapagos, Dartmouth College and Brooklyn, New York. Scholarships are available!

Gogi Abroad offers a diverse range of travel opportunities for middle and high school students. Most trips are 10-15 days in duration, and include a variety of activities–from Spanish language classes, learning to surf on the beaches to hiking ancient trails inPeru or Ecuador.  In the midst of all these new experiences,  students also have time to reflect and simply take in the beauty of each day.

School Year Abroad is a high school study abroad program for Juniors and Seniors in Italy, Spain, France, and China. Students attend independent schools  providing a high quality American-style education in an international setting. Students are able to take transferable courses back to the USA so they won't miss out on that chemistry or math class that is ofter hard to find abroad!

International Studies Abroad was the program Senora Traub used to move to Spain for her first international semester! ISA is a leading provider of high-quality, affordable, cultural and language immersion programs. Their mission is to provide students with a transformative experience aimed at fostering independence, The HS 2018 program destinations include: Canada, Costa Rica, France, Italy, Peru, and Spain.

CET Academic Programs are 3-4 weeks and help students gain academic and leadership skills, hone language ability, and develop long-lasting friendships during a fun and engaging summer experience. College credit can be awarded for participation. Destinations include Argentina, Cuba, China, and Italy.

Cultural Homestay International is a non-profit organization that offers life-changing programs such as high school, work and travel, internships, volunteering, childcare and travel abroad. Students can study abroad for 3, 5, or 10 months in an international school.

Quest Exchange is a non-profit organization that provides high school study abroad programs for US American students. Destinations include Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Spain, Mexico, Chile, and many more.

Global Routes hosts high school exchange programs as well as GAP year programs. Program themes include community service and leadership. Destinations include Ecuador, Tanzania, Costa Rica, and Nepal.

AFS Intercultural Programs consist of high school exchange programs as well as summer study abroad programs for teens. Students can travel to over 30 countries and scholarships are available.

CIEE hosts high school student exchange programs, summer programs, as well as GAP year programs. Students can study in Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, etc. Program themes include language and culture, service and leadership, and global internship.

People to People was founded by US President Dwight D Einsenhower in 1965  to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among peoples of different countries and diverse cultures. To this day, the organization works to provide high school students with these types of international exchanges.
