Bonjour CIS! We have made it to Senegal! My travel experience was a bit crazy because AirFrance decided to go on strike on the day I was supposed to fly to Paris so I had to do a quick detour to Belgium instead. But, I have finally made it! I am super tired from flying from San Diego to Washington D.C. to Brussels to Senegal and then a few hours loading and driving to the hotel but it is good to be settling in. Some of my initial thoughts are:
-I should have packed jeans! Lots of Senegalese women are wearing them. There is a mix of traditional wear and Western wear. Later we will be buying traditional clothing to wear at special events. I can't wait to try it on!
-Lots of men are wearing the Boubou! I am so glad my Operation Senegal kids taught about that. Great researching guys!
-I haven't seen any street dogs yet which is a surprise for me because most countries I have been to have an overwhelming number of street dogs.
Senegalese time is a lot like Guatemalan time... everything starts an hour or two after they say it is going to start. Right now, it is 11:09 am and I am sitting at a meeting that was supposed to start at 10 am. It takes some getting used to but I am learning to be patient and not frustrated. When in Senegal, you do how the Senegalese do.
The toilets have many forms! Check out my instagram @senoratraub to see one of the different toilets I saw in the airport.
French is spoken in the schools but Wolof is more widely used in the home and on the streets. I am now learning a bit of Wolof. I will be posting a video of Wolof soon... stay tuned!
Okay, the presentation is starting soon so I have to run. Ba beenen! (Goodbye in Wolof)
